Bishop’s Move ensures the show goes on at Usher Hall

14th July 2008

Bishop’s Move Edinburgh ensures local landmark’s refurbishment goes like a song
Usher Hall, Edinburgh’s beloved concert hall landmark, will begin a complete refurbishment this September, and Bishop’s Move – the UK’s largest independent removals firm – will be on hand to ensure the logistics of the operation run smoothly.

Preliminary work on the refurbishment begun earlier this year, but was suspended to accommodate the International Festival. On 2nd September, the Hall closed once more, with internal and external work beginning in earnest, including the creation of a new glass wing and concert hall. The venue is scheduled to reopen in August 2008.
Bishop’s Move was brought in to assist the venue management team in the smooth implementation of the refurbishment progress. Initial work began late in July, in the form of the disposal of a large vanload of unwanted items. Prior to the closure of the venue in early September, a team of twelve specialists from Bishop’s Move removed various items of valuable furniture and artworks as well as three safes weighing over a ton each. All items removed were placed in secure storage in a secret location.

In total, twenty men were involved, and the work took a total of three days, leaving the venue ready for the refurbishment. Bishop’s Move will be on hand to help when the items are re-installed in their newly updated home next year.
Bishop’s Move has 150 years of expertise and experience in carrying out large-scale moves for prestigious landmarks – previous clients have included Buckingham Palace and the Parliamentary Works Directorate in London.
Bishop’s Move was chosen for this important project due to the extensive work it has carried out for the Edinburgh City Council. This includes the recent move of almost 3000 people to the new Council Headquarters at Waverley Court in East Market Street, and the imminent relocation of the Roads Departments to the Chesser Road facility. Bishop’s Move is also a leader in the field of valuable and precious object removals, with specialist technicians and packaging techniques to ensure the relocation is tailored into a bespoke moving solution.

David Bruce, General Manager, Bishop’s Move, Edinburgh comments: “Bishop’s Move is proud to be a part of this exciting local project. Usher Hall is an integral part of Edinburgh’s cultural landscape and this refurbishment will really put it on the international stage.

“The removal and storage of furniture, artworks and other valuable items is an important, but often overlooked, element of the process. Each item is a part of the venue’s fabric, and we’re very aware of the history of what we have been asked to handle.

“With all of the branch’s experience, we look forward to completing the work with Usher Hall to ensure the new concert hall opens on time and to plan.”
